While perfectly preserving the site's original sense of openness. Crucially, the new mass had to avoid feeling dense or overwhelming, maintaining the comfortable microclimate and charming atmosphere that the family had always loved.
To maximize open space, the new building follows a longitudinal axis along the site boundary. By reconfiguring the parking and circulation, we positioned an activity lawn at the front, nestled between the two residences. This shared, high-quality garden acts as a playground for children, thoughtfully surrounded by common living spaces, allowing parents and family members to watch over and engage in their activities.
The communal areas at the front of the new house seamlessly connect to the original home via a covered ramp walkway. This ensures barrier-free access across all spaces—from the parking, pool, and gym to the double-volume semi-outdoor terrace. This physical connection is the project’s conceptual heart, encouraging constant movement between the buildings so the family can spend more quality time together, despite living under separate roofs.
The architecture features stacked timber horizontal planes, accented with vertical louvers that act as a veil, filtering sunlight and providing privacy from passerby. This allows the residents to keep their shades open to the view all day.
Ultimately, Uttayan Residence eschews dramatic gestures in favor of a functional, life-enhancing space, using its shared green core to foster deeper family relationships.
